BACOLOD CITY, Dec. 3 (PNA) -– The Department of Education (DepEd) in Negros Occidental encouraged schools in the province to hold Christmas parties in a “simple manner.”
Provincial Schools Division Superintendent Juliet Jeruta said Tuesday that if possible, schools should do away with Christmas parties and instead donate their budget to the victims of super typhoon Yolanda.
However, if schools and parents want to have Christmas parties, they should celebrate in “a simple manner,” she added.
“Even before Yolanda, Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro had already issued a memorandum to public schools to celebrate Christmas parties simply and explain to students the essence of the occasion,” Jeruta said.
She said that contributions for the parties that will be given to the typhoon victims can be deposited to the bank account of the DepEd-6 regional office.
“Since there are already many donations for victims in Eastern Visayas especially Tacloban, the Negros Occidental Schools Division wants to focus their help to the victims in northern Negros and other areas in Western Visayas,” Jeruta added.
She also said the DepEd has launched a campaign among public school students to write Christmas cards and letters of hope to school children who are victims of the typhoon. The campaign will end on December 5.
“We hope that through these letters we could lift the spirit and morale of the students in the affected areas, Jeruta said. (PNA)
