Samar province ready with P50M initial fund for Basey’s permanent relocation site

Posted on November 28, 2013

BASEY, Samar, Nov. 28 (PNA)– The provincial government of Samar is ready with an initial P50 million to jumpstart the establishment of a permanent relocation site for families displaced by super typhoon Yolanda in Basey town.

Basey vice mayor Paul Charles Adona said that they were informed by the provincial government of the available fund this week.

Adona said that their local government has already identified a two to three hectare lot just adjacent the site of the temporary bunkhouses that are being constructed by the dept of public works and highways at sitio Bangon, Canmanila village.

Next week the Sangguniang Bayan through an ordinance will authorize mayor Jojie Ponferada to negotiate with the owner/s of the said lots, he said.

Families living along the seawall, riverside and seaside will be among those to be prioritised in the process of identifying recipients for the shelter project.

Adona added that they will be crafting an ordinance that prohibits construction of dwellings 20 meters away from the seawall thereby making the residents along these areas as among the priorities.

These areas suffered from heavy damages caused by Yolanda where more than 2700 families from seven villages at the poblacion area were displaced.

Meantime, construction of 18 units of temporary bunkhouses by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)is ongoing.

Adona said that families that will be temporarily housed in these bunkhouse were identified in coordination with the DSWD.

Some 51,000 families were displaced with close to 200 casualties. Some of the displaced families are still staying in evacuation centers, he added.

Meantime, distribution of relief goods is ongoing spearheaded by village chiefs and assisted by members of the Philippine Army (PA). (PNA)
