UPLB agri-biotech coeds mark “Nat’l Biotechnology Week” with educational events

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna Nov. 21 (PNA) -– The League of Agricultural Biotechnology Students of the University of the Philippines in Los Baños (UPLABS) will host a series of biotechnology events, symposium and exhibits to highlight this year’s “National Biotechnology Week” from Nov. 25 to 29.

Jayvee Rosal, UPLABS president, steered his organization in the Biotech Week observance which coincides with the association’s 3rd Founding Anniversary with educational and fun activities in a bid to underscore the importance of biotechnology education.

UPLABS is the only academic organization under the UPLB College of Agriculture that promotes camaraderie among BS Agricultural Biotechnology students as well as advocates biotechnology for the country’s agricultural advancement.

Aileen Garcia, senior specialist for communications of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) disclosed that UPLABS special guest Dr. V. Bruce J. Tolentino, IRRI Deputy Director General for Communications and Partnerships, will grace the opening of the UPLABS Exhibits on Monday, Nov. 25 at 9 a.m. at the Agronomy Building Lobby.

The biotech student organization will also host the Biotech Career Orientation at 10 a.m. at Drilon Hall of the Southeast Asia Research Council for Agriculture (SEARCA).

On Nov. 27, “TataLABS ka ba? : A General Biotechnology Quiz Contest” with fun-filled and thrilling elimination for the easy, average and difficult quiz rounds will be held at 7 p.m. at the Agricultural Systems Cluster Lecture Hall.

The week-long celebration will culminate on Nov. 29 with the Open Discussion Symposium on “Enhancement of Food Nutritional Value Through Agricultural Biotechnology” with Resource Speaker Dr. Gerard Barry, IRRI Golden Rice Network Coordinator at 3 p.m. at Drilon Hall, SEARCA. (PNA)
