MANILA, Nov. 13 (PNA) — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Wednesday the official death toll from super typhoon “Yolanda” has breached the 2,000-mark, mostly in Eastern Visayas, while almost 3,700 people were injured and at least 80 others remained missing.
In a press briefing Wednesday afternoon, NDRRMC Executive Director Eduardo Del Rosario said the number of confirmed deaths due to the onslaught of the killer typhoon Friday last week had risen to 2,275 and the injured victims stood at 3,665.
He added that the number of affected families “decreased” because it was now getting clearer who in Eastern Visayas were really affected by the typhoon.
According to Del Rosario, the government continues to implement the necessary measures to restore order in Tacloban City.
There are “no restrictions” as to travel in and out of Tacloban, except when the curfew is being enforced from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., he said.
Del Rosario added that the damage caused by “Yolanda” was estimated at P 761,400,371.89, of which P560 million was in agriculture.
The NDRRMC chief said that communication lines have been restored 50-60 percent in the Visayas region.
Meanwhile, Senior Supt. R’win Pagkalinawan, who was also present in the briefing, said that a total of 559 police personnel have been sent to Tacloban alone to prevent looting.
He added that police teams were also deployed at the northern and southern ends of the San Juanico Bridge.
The PNP official said that 85 policemen have been sent to Ormoc City and 120 others to Guiuan, Eastern Samar. (PNA)
