KIRKUK, Iraq, (PNA/Xinhua) — The Iraqi police foiled an attack by two suicide bombers on a police station at a town in Iraq’s Kirkuk province on Monday, and at least two policemen were killed and six people wounded, a provincial police source said.
The attack occurred around noon when two suicide bombers wearing explosive vests and disguised in army uniforms tried to break into a police station in the town of Riyadh, some 45 km west of the provincial capital city of Kirkuk, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The guards of the station recognized the suicide bombers and opened fire on them, forcing the attackers to blow up themselves outside the station, the source said, adding two policemen were killed and three others and three civilians wounded, the source said.
The attack in Kirkuk followed other bomb attacks, including suicide bombings, in Salahudin province in north of Baghdad earlier in the day, wounding at least 21 people.
Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, almost 7, 000 Iraqis were killed and over 16,000 others injured from January to October this year.
