SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, (PNA) — Some 100 families were rendered homeless when the roofs of their houses were blown away by strong wind unleashed by typhoon “Vinta” in Ilocos Norte Friday night, a report from the Ilocos Norte provincial government said.
At the same time, electricity was knocked off and several years-old trees were uprooted blocking some highways and thoroughfares.
The report said Gov. Imee Marcos ordered the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to intensify its monitoring activities to find out the number of residents affected by the typhoon needing assistance.
Meanwhile, Mayor Erdio Valenzuela of Dingras town initially reported that 20 houses were unroofed by the strong wind in his town but could not give the estimated losses from those affected as assessment is still going on.
The families residing in these damaged houses stayed overnight at the municipal hall.
on the other hand in Laoag City, Dr. Melvin Manuel, chairman of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, reported that 10 houses also lost their roofs as a result of the typhoon.
The occupants of these houses were immediately evacuated and assisted by the City Social Welfare Office.
A similar situation occurred in Bangui, Burgos, Pagudpod, Pasuquin and Solsona, the report stated.
All over the province, no casualty was reported but an employee of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) was hurt when hit by a fallen tree while conducting clearing operations.
As of Saturday, electricity was already restored in many areas of the province.
