CEBU CITY, (PNA) — The celebration of All Saints’ Day Friday and All Souls’ Day Saturday in Cebu and Central Visayas was generally peaceful, a ranking police official said.
“So far, it has been generally peaceful,” said Chief Supt. Danilo Constantino, director of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 based at Camp Sergio Osmena in Cebu City.
Constantino said he has visited cemeteries in Talisay City, Naga City, San Fernando and Carcar City to ensure their security plan was in place.
Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) director Noel Gillamac said the celebration for the dead in the province was peaceful.
However, Gillamac said they will ask Supt. Eduardo Saavedra, chief of the Naga City Police Station, to explain his absence.
Saavedra reportedly had asked permission to go to Albay to attend a court hearing.
“His presence is very much needed here,” Gillamac said.
In Cebu City, several sharp items, many of them for cleaning graves, were confiscated from people entering cemeteries.
“We just have to seize these for security reasons,” Cebu City Police Office director Noli Romana, said.
Romana said the installation of closed-circuit television cameras in major cemeteries helped them monitor criminal elements.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama inspected 11 public and private cemeteries in the city and checked the police public assistance desks to ensure there were policemen and volunteers to address public concerns.
Rama said he was satisfied with the performance of police assigned in different cemeteries and thanked Romana for ensuring that all his men did their jobs well.
