CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, (PNA) -– A police officer died when an unidentified suspect set on fire the office of the Commissions on Elections (Comelec) in Iligan City on Monday, a police report reaching here on Wednesday said.
Police Supt. Gerardo Roxas, chief of the Iligan City Police office, said that Police officer Rey Borinaga of the Iligan Police was trapped inside the Comelec office and died of smoke suffocation.
He said that Borinaga got a detail assignment to secure the city’s Comelec office during the barangay elections last Monday.
The report reaching here said that a disgruntled candidate who lost in the barangay elections in the rural village of Rogongon was the suspect in the burning of the Comelec office in Iligan City.
Roxas said the police have identified the suspect but are still validating the information.
He said the suspect could be charged with arson if the evidence warrant.
