BACOLOD CITY, (PNA) – The City Council here passed a resolution Wednesday seeking to commemorate every sixth of November the historic surrender of the Spanish colonizers in this city.
The neighboring cities of Bago and Silay observe the triumph of the Negros revolutionary movement or the “Cinco de Noviembre” during the fifth of November.
According to the resolution authored by Councilor Jocelle Bapata-Sigue, November is very significant for Bacolod because it was here that the conclusion of the Cinco de Noviembre revolution started.
It then led to the establishment of the “Republica de Negros” upon the surrender of the Spanish politico-military Governor Isidro de Castro in Nov. 6, 1898.
Batapa-Sigue, who chairs the committee on history, arts and culture, pointed out that Nov. 6 also marks the 115th anniversary of the Act of Capitulation, or the Document of Surrender signed by De Castro and the Negrense revolutionary forces led by General Juan Araneta and Aniceto Lacson on Nov. 6, 1898 at the house of Don Jose Ruiz de Luzuriaga.
The Luzuriaga house eventually became the seat of the Provincial Government which became the Bacolod City Hall where a historical marker was placed by the National Historical Institute commemorating the surrender of the Spanish forces to the locals.
The road where the City Hall is located has been named Luzuriaga St.
It is fitting to commemorate and value the event by rededicating the same marker and observe its 115th year, the resolution added.
