MANILA, (PNA) — Barangay election in some barangays in Calayan, Cagayan has been reset by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
The poll body postponed the October 28 polls to October 30 and 31, said Bartolome Sinocruz, Deputy Executive Director for Operations (DEDO) of the Comelec.
He added the barangays in the main island of Calayan will hold the elections on October 30 while five island barangays will have their elections on October 31.
The election in the said province has been moved to another date as election paraphernalia have yet to reach the polling precincts due to bad weather.
However, Sinocruz noted that supplies are now en route to Calayan. They are now in Camiguin islands proceeding to Calayan
Meanwhile, Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said the 956 Board of Elections Tellers (BETs) in Maguindanao have been replaced by police trainees for not reporting to their assigned precincts after experiencing harassment.
Likewise, the said trainees have been tapped to assist voters in some areas in Lanao del Sur and Kalinga.
Aside from the members of the Philippine National Police, the poll body can also tap government civil servants to assist voters in the absence of public school teachers.
On the other hand, election watchdog, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) will ask Congress and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to allocate funds to create a unified computerized voters’ list (CVL) to address the problem of disenfranchised voters during election.
PPCRV chairperson Henrietta De Villa said they had received several reports that some voters were unable to vote since they did not find their names in the list.
“We would also write a letter to Congress and the DBM that if there is an item about this in the budget, they should not remove the specific budget because (reconciling of the names of voters) is important, it is part of the process, in order to come up with a unified voters’ list,” she added.
