MANILA, (PNA) — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) went on heightened alert Friday to prepare for the expected exodus of travelers from urban centers to the provinces due to the barangay elections on Monday.
PCG spokesman Commander Armand Balilo said all of their district headquarters were placed on alert status and sea marshals were reminded to be extra vigilant while on board passenger ships to ensure the safety of passengers.
The PCG also deployed K9 units in seaports to prevent illegal cargo on board passenger ships.
Balilo reminded the public that carrying firearms on ships without the appropriate Comelec exemption is not allowed as the gun ban is still in effect.
He said the pubic should report to authorities any unattended baggage or persons acting suspiciously.
The PCG is expected to extend it alert status until the celebration of the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
