Posted on October 25, 2013

BACOLOD CITY, (PNA) –- The De La Salle University (DLSU) men and women woodpushers reclaimed the titles they won in 2001 and 2002 in this year’s 18th UniGames chess competition on Thursday at the University of St. La Salle (USLS) library here.

The men’s team collected 10 match points for 16.5 points to become team champion, while the women’s team got 14 match points for a total of 26 points to dominate their division.

The DLSU men dislodged defending champion De La Salle-College of St. Benilde that garnered only nine match points for 16 points to settle for silver. Polytechnic University of the Philippines took the bronze with 14 points.

The De La Salle-College of St. Benilde has dominated men’s chess from 2008 until 2012.

In the women’s division, DLSU dislodged defending champion University of the Philippines-Diliman, which failed to send its chess teams this year. The DLSU women team also won the title in 2006 and 2010.

USLS won the silver in women’s team event with 11 match points to collect 21.5 points, while Cor Jesu College of Digos City won the bronze with 10 match points to end with 15 points.

Jose Maria College of Davao’s Kenneth John Tabada, Negrense Jerich Cajeras of DLSU and Michael Ocido of West Negros University had identical 4.5 points but Tabada won the gold medal in Board 1.

In Board 2, Jan Roldan Oriendo of Polytechnic University of the Philippines won the gold while Robert Mendez of Jose Maria College ruled Board 3.

Jesse Abucejo of De La Salle-College of St. Benilde dominated Board 4 while Christian Nañola of DLSU also won the gold in Board 5.
