MANILA, (PNA) –The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will monitor the giving of relief goods to the people affected by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
In a press conference, Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said the monitoring will be conducted to ensure that election laws are followed while helping individuals from the quake-stricken areas during the election period.
He stressed that electoral candidates should refrain from joining relief distribution.
He added, “We just want to make sure that since this is the election period then the Comelec have some say in making sure that the distribution of relief will not be used for political purposes.”
Brillantes explained that there is the risk reduction committee involving the national government, national and local officials up to the barangay level that would help victims of disasters.
On the other hand, Brillantes said that they will attempt to issue a resolution to settle the matter regarding the distribution of relief goods during the campaign period.
